For Big Brown and Eight Belles…

The cheers of glory ripped into a gasp. The filly went down. He heard her playful heartsong, so full of joy and courage, change into a scream.”Run On! Run O——a-a-a-a-a-n!”…and so he did, for the hands of his rider, and the song of the filly urged him forward…Run On!

He could not help her. He wanted to stop, but there was nothing to be done. Glancing back with the corner of his eye, pulling hard against the tightened bit, he saw her. He balked, and tugged. His head was reigned forward. Only moments ago, they had run so joyfully together. She teased and taunted him, telling him that she was the only one who would beat him that day. She was beautiful…her spirit, young and happy. She made him run, and did nearly beat him. At the finish line, they both laughed. She still taunted with her good and gracious nature. It was a great race. She was a great filly. Run On!” She said…and so he did.

They still visit, running and laughing in his dreams.
